• Roberto Griot is a masterful painter who is renowned for his powerful Afro-Brazilian subject matter and unique style.
During our session he spoke about creativity and the meaning of his work, which he hoped 'would cause a revolution based on love.' Meanwhile his two sons played in the different rooms of the second story studio. When we were finished he called in his two sons, put his arms around them and said '"these two are my favorite creations."

Sadly he passed away July 1, 2015. His studio and gallery are in the Pelourinho District of Salvador da Bahia, Brasil.

 • When we arrived to visit Maestro Valdez it was to buy some of his ceramic art. He was renowned for using a very ancient method of working. After choosing the pieces I asked for permission to make some photos of him working - he graciously agreed. After I got my gear out of the car he proceeded to open up his studio and home to me, introducing me to his immediate family. I remember the face of a man who'd worked hard throughout a tough life yet remained humble before his earthen materials, devoted to his craft and his family.

 • Looking down the hill into the Pelourinho neighborhood in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. The name pelourinho refers to a post/pillar that slaves were tied to and whipped. For many decades the Pelourinho Hotel had a metal sculpture, in their courtyard, depicting a man whipping another tied to the pillar. It has been removed.

 • Lazarus - the King of the group Maracatu Nação Pernambuco - in Olinda, Brazil. Taken during a break in their rehearsal for Carnaval. I will always remember his generosity of spirit and kindness....a very good leader.

The Maracatu de nação style has origins in the investiture ceremonies of the Reis do Congo (Kings of Congo), who were slaves that occupied leadership roles within the slave community. When slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888, the institution of the Kings of Congo ceased to exist. Nonetheless, nações continued to choose symbolic leaders and evoke coronation ceremonies for those leaders. Although a maracatu performance is secular, traditional nações are grouped around Candomblé or Jurema (Afro-Brazilian religions) terreiros (bases) and the principles of Candomblé infuse their activities.
Traditional nações perform by parading with a drumming group of 80-100, a singer and chorus, and a coterie of dancers and stock characters including the king and queen. Dancers and stock characters dress and behave to imitate the Portuguese royal court of the Baroque period.

 • Las Golondrinas is a village in the heart of Ecuador. I discovered it on an overland adventure through the backwoods of Ecuador that I travelled by bus, hiking, river ferry, canoe and land rover. We nicknamed the area 'Green Hell' for the sense of desolation we found everywhere, even in nature. We came across a swarm of Brazilian 'killer bees' and a couple of deadly bushmaster snakes. Leaf cutter ants headed the list of a morale withering assortment of insects. In Las Golondrinas cock fighting was a key pastime, side arms a wardrobe accessory, and the murder rate was wild west level.
This young boy and his friend were painting the inside of the roadside cantina where we stopped to eat - they sang ballads while they worked and stopped for a break when I made this image.

 • Beneath the Surface is a portfolio of images that examines everyday scenes and objects from a different point of view than ‘consensus’ reality. In some cultures what we see with the eye is only a starting point from which many meanings can be brought forward. This series proceeds from that simple fact; that a camera points in two directions: towards an inner and an outer reality. It seeks to discover, in the old sense of the word which derives from the Latin dis- and cooperire, meaning 'to remove the covering; completely uncover’. To see what else might exist beneath the surface of what we brush past in our daily lives.

The ‘Allan Gardens’ part of the series is an ongoing project that I work on during walks in and around a greenhouse located in downtown Toronto. These are ‘straight’ photographs in the sense that, aside from minimal global adjustments, they have not been digitally manipulated.

 • Sometimes we make photos unconsciously - that was the case here. This image was made in 2015 - but it wasn't until 4 years later that I 'saw' it in my catalogue waiting to share it's subtle message. What tugged at my heart was the dynamic between these two sisters. The little one feels secure knowing her big sister is close at hand to protect her - she feels safe. It's the combined vulnerability and strength of the older one that moved me - the archetype of the older sister....the boss.
