• In today’s society, there is a great need for people like Rod Michano. He has dedicated his life to educating and helping others with HIV/AIDS. This man has beaten the odds for twenty plus years and has often spent months in a hospice.
As a parting thought, consider this quote by Rob Michano: ““My goal is to offer peace and hope to all people in this life, especially People living with HIV/AIDS, regardless of what our Creator places in front of each one of us. My own illness has actually taught me about life…how to live in a better way, both spiritually and mentally. The one thing I have learned most is to never give up…through the worst of circumstances, sometimes come the most valuable lessons of our existence. I had to make a choice, to live or die, but I chose to live…I believe the Creator kept me here to send this message of hope to all people of Mother Earth. Just never give up.”

 • Roberto Griot is a masterful painter who is renowned for his powerful Afro-Brazilian subject matter and unique style.
During our session he spoke about creativity and the meaning of his work, which he hoped 'would cause a revolution based on love.' Meanwhile his two sons played in the different rooms of the second story studio. When we were finished he called in his two sons, put his arms around them and said '"these two are my favorite creations."

Sadly he passed away July 1, 2015. His studio and gallery are in the Pelourinho District of Salvador da Bahia, Brasil.

 • Rosa was a human ball of fire from Calabria, Italy and one of my first subjects as a photographer. She provided the drinks and entertainment that fueled the ongoing festive vibe at The Gem on Davenport; a hangout for artists, Irish and locals during the mid 80's.
I will never forget the day Rosa agreed to let me do a series of photos of her....I was excited and she was wild, unpredictable and very kind.

 • Lazarus - the King of the group Maracatu Nação Pernambuco - in Olinda, Brazil. Taken during a break in their rehearsal for Carnaval. I will always remember his generosity of spirit and kindness....a very good leader.

The Maracatu de nação style has origins in the investiture ceremonies of the Reis do Congo (Kings of Congo), who were slaves that occupied leadership roles within the slave community. When slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888, the institution of the Kings of Congo ceased to exist. Nonetheless, nações continued to choose symbolic leaders and evoke coronation ceremonies for those leaders. Although a maracatu performance is secular, traditional nações are grouped around Candomblé or Jurema (Afro-Brazilian religions) terreiros (bases) and the principles of Candomblé infuse their activities.
Traditional nações perform by parading with a drumming group of 80-100, a singer and chorus, and a coterie of dancers and stock characters including the king and queen. Dancers and stock characters dress and behave to imitate the Portuguese royal court of the Baroque period.

 • Chappy traveled from his home in Lake Cowal, Australia to Toronto where he confronted Peter Munk, CEO, Barrick Mines, about the impact of Barrick's mine on his community. Munk and his entourage dismissed him with smirks and jokes.
Indigenous owners and environmental activists have run a 14-year campaign to close the gold mine. They argue it poses large health risks to the local community, is an immense drain on scarce freshwater resources and poisons the environment with cyanide and other toxic wastes.
