Portraits by Michael O'Brien

The SOUL SERIES is an ongoing, long term portrait project by Toronto photographer Michael O’Brien. The collection evolved from an inspiring portrait session with one person. In it, O’Brien focuses on the subtler, more introspective and spiritual side of his subjects to reveal the spaciousness and stillness that resides in each moment. Shot on location with existing light, O’Brien uses both film and digital formats to help make these black and white images into timeless, classic documents. Along with building a strong rapport with the subject, this approach aims to strip away the glossy, surface treatment that people are sometimes subjected to in photography, and allows other deeper aspects of the real person to come through.
